Loy Krathong is a festival celebrated annually in Thailand on the night of the full moon in November.

During the festival, small decorative baskets called krathong are floated on rivers, lakes and canals. Krathongs are traditionally made of plant materials like banana leaves and flowers, and contain candles, incense and small offerings.

Floating krathongs on water symbolizes letting go of grudges, anger and negative thoughts. The festival is a time to make wishes for good fortune and new beginnings. Fireworks, lanterns and festivities fill city streets.

According to tradition, the festival originates from honoring the water goddess by floating candlelit lotus-shaped vessels. In modern times, Loy Krathong has evolved into a popular public celebration.
